We found this sound-less promotional film from 1963 while digging around the Land Rover archives. The minute-long flick shows a Series II that has been fitted with tank-like tracks for additional ground clearance and off-road prowess. The prototype is seen driving effortlessly through a river, through a ditch, and up a steep, muddy slope. While there was no snow when the tests were carried out, we imagine this prototype would be virtually unstoppable in the Alps.
The project was ultimately canned and a tracked Land Rover was never mass-produced at Solihull, but several aftermarket companies — including Cuthbertson — in the United Kingdom and abroad offered track conversions for Series I, II, and II models and, later, Defenders.
