Rewind to Washington DC in 1974

We’re traveling back to Washington DC in May of 1974. The picture below was taken during a bus strike which caused unprecedented chaos in the city. According to the photographer, about 250,000 commuters who usually relied on public transportation to get to work were forced to drive their car and, consequently, find a parking spot in the city.

What car can you identify in the picture below? What one(s) would you most like to have in your garage? We’d take whichever one is easiest to maneuver out! On a more serious note, we wouldn’t be unhappy with the blue Chevrolet Corvair parked on the left side of the photo, or with the blue Mercedes-Benz w108 just a few cars away.

  1. i will take all the beetles, both the bay window vw buses plus the split window bus, the fastback and squareback, blue fiat 850 coupe, 240z, mgb, and the volvo 140/160. i wonder how many of the wagons had 9 people in them. the roads in and out of the city looked just as bad.

  2. It has to be the Matador next to the red bug. So ugly it is cool. The two door Corvair over the four door a few rows away will do nicely too. Notice the poor guy in the middle of the lot. Probably wondering how he’s going to get his car out.

  4. Splitty deluxe Kombi in upper right, blue Chevy Malibu also in said corner. Cool pic, thanks for sharing! It’s like something out of a kid’s book.
