We’re traveling back to Lyon, France, in the 1950s and the 1960s. What car(s) can you identify in the following pictures? What one(s) would you most like to have in your garage?
In the first picture we’d pick either the Panhard Dyna or the Fiat 600. We’ll have the Taunus and one of the Renault 4s in the second picture, and the 204 in the third picture.
Photos kindly provided by the city of Lyon’s archives department.
I’d have the 2 door hardtop Simca Aronde in picture 1. It looks like a scaled-down Facel Vega.
Oh Lordy – I have gone into some sort of classics coma here – can’t concentrate and bring myself to select just one or two !!
Ha, wait until next week’s Rewind article. It’s Lyon again, a high-res shot with literally hundreds of cars.
oh go on then I’ll take the Simca 1000, R16 and Ami from pic 3
In picture 2, ID19, Renault 4L, Peugeot 403, Simca 1100, Ford Taunus 17m, AMI 6 Berline, Renault Dauphine, Renault 4, 2CV, Peugeot 404, Peugeot J7, Peugeot 203, AMI 6 Break, Citroen HY and many more 🙂
1st picture :
I think it’s a 600 and not a 500. The two Panhard Dya are different : one is an early one with very small rear lights.
The SIMCA Plein Ciel is a VERY nice car, a scaled down Facl Vega like said before. The Peugeot 203 cabriolet is also quite nice. Both are now the two clostliest car but I think I’d go for an early 2CV ! Give me the one at the right bottom corner with wide rear window yet still retaining long hood. Surely an 1957-1958 AZ or AZL.
Question : what’s those fins at left ? An English car like a Ford Zodiac or Sunbeam Rapier ?
Yes, it’s a 600 – that was a typo on my part, my bad.
I’m not sure what those fins are, I’m admittedly not very well versed in British cars. Maybe someone else can pitch in.
2nd photo : There is a black SIMCA Chambord or Beaulieu. Rare in all black (like a Presidence).
Maybe I’d choose the CitroĂ«n H to be seen at right which must have a colourful livery !
3rd picture : I have doubts about two cars at right in front of the SIMCA 1000.
The white one is surely a VW1500 “notchback” but after there is a small one which is to be found again but in white 4 cars later. I’d bet for two Fiat 600s.
Maybe I’d choose the VW which looks like one of the first.
i too will take the VW notchback. looking forward to more ” Rewinds “. thanks
Great pictures … I wonder if the same taken today would show so many French cars … I have a soft spot for those Panhard and the 203 convertible. Also nice to see locally made Berliet on the construction site
I’m glad someone noticed the Berliet!
I don’t think there would be this many French cars in the pics – lots of German cars today, a couple of Italians and a growing number of Toyotas.
