Fiat’s archives department has provided us with a full color promotional video that was shot shortly after the 500 was introduced in July of 1957. The video highlights all aspects of the 500 including how to start the car, how to read the instrument cluster and how the air-cooled two-cylinder engine works.
Overall, the videos bills the 500 as a smaller version of the 600 that is designed to provide basic, reliable and, above all, affordable transportation to millions of people in Italy and abroad. Fiat’s marketing department was spot on, and that’s exactly what the 500 did during its 18-year long production run.
On the other hand, anyone that’s ever driven a 500 will attest to the fact the performance showcased at about 3:28 is more than a little optimistic. Finally, the uphill race between two 500s that starts at 3:55 is well worth a watch.
