Rewind to East Germany in the mid-1980s

We’re traveling back to East Germany in 1984, 1985 and 1986. The pictures below were taken in Berlin, in Leipzig and in Suhl. There are a lot of Trabants, Wartburgs and Ladas but take a closer look, there are a few surprises hidden in the mix.

What car(s) and truck(s) can you identify in the following images? What one(s) would you most like to have in your garage? We’d pick one of the Wartburgs, but we’d also be tempted by the Barkas visible in the eighth photo.

Berlin, Karl-Marx-Allee, Restaurant "Moskau"

Berlin, Leninallee Kreuzung Ho-Chi-Minh-Straße

Berlin, Greifswalder Straße, Straßenverkehr, Winter

Berlin, Haupttelegrafenamt

Berlin, Rosenthaler Platz

LPG Braunschwende, Getreideernte

Leipzig, Frühjahrsmesse, Nordeingang

Leipzig, Herbstmesse, Sowjetischer Pavillon

Leipzig, "Neues Rathaus", Winter

Suhl, Wohnhochhaus, "Centrum"-Warenhaus, Winter

All pictures courtesy of Germany’s Bundesarchiv.

  2. Ninth photo down. The car next to the Trabant is a Škoda 100. The one behind that looks like a Moskvich 408.
