Although brown cars have been around for decades, their heyday was undeniably the 1970s when companies from all over the automotive galaxy offered at least one shade of it. In retrospect, brown went remarkably well with cars that were often laden with emissions equipment such as air pumps and 5-mph bumpers.
Brown largely fell out of vogue over the course of the 1990s as automakers experimented with brighter, more complex colors. Certain shades of it started to make a comeback – generally in matte or metallic – when the 21st century rolled around and Volvo, Porsche, Subaru and Fiat are among the automakers that offer brown in their current palette of colors. Pure brown remains rare on this side of a UPS truck, however.
Which car do you think looks best in brown?
Too many good ones 🙂 But that Mk1 4Runner is speaking to me..
Yep, the 4runner and the Jeep look good in the brown. Jag doesn’t look too bad either.
For me, the GMC Suburban looks like it was made to be painted in brown – with the Mercedes W116 a close second.
volvo, vw bus and the cj all look good.
Beautiful era…
