Is the Mercedes-Benz C-Class (w202) a future classic?

mercedes-w202-c-class-4Mercedes-Benz launched the w202 C-Class in 1993 to replace the ten-year old w201 190, the original Baby Benz. In addition to introducing the C-Class name to the Mercedes lineup, the w202 propelled the Stuttgart-based firm into a new era of design characterized by softer, more modern lines.

The C-Class was a big hit – especially in the United States and its home country of Germany – but in retrospect it came during a dark time for Mercedes. Threatened in the U.S. by stiff competition from Japanese upstarts like Lexus and Infiniti, Mercedes desperately tried to cut costs in order to offer cheaper cars. The end result was a general regression in build quality and reliability.

Like the larger w210 E-Class, the w202 C-Class was prone to nasty electrical gremlins and had a worse tendency to rust than the 190 it replaced. Mercedes gradually fixed the issues and the later cars were noticeably better screwed together, but the w202 is generally considered a step down from the 190.

Mercedes ended production of the w202 in 2000 so late examples are still years away from achieving classic status but some of the earlier models have already celebrated their 20th birthday. Will non-AMG w202s become sought after by Mercedes enthusiasts, or will they forever remain the unloved, throwaway Baby Benz?

  1. yes, i think they will be future classic. mine is 20 years old now 310000km on it now and no big costs yet and drives like a big car, also the 200d is thesame engine as in the 190d and is rock solid. strange enough i have no rust at all..

  2. My first car was a C250D BVA Elegance. I bought it at 120000km (counter), I think it was at least 100000km more and am separated three years later about 470000Km (counter or 570000Km). I was myself maintenance and have never had any problems. Really a great car…

  6. yes I think they will i drive the C230 kompressor with full AMG she’s on a 97 with 170 thousand on the clock and she is tight as a drum. few little jobs done mainly wear and tear and a little rust has started on the arch but living next to the sea I’d expect that. I’ve had mine 2 years and it’s a great car

  8. Despite any gremlins (and mine has a few electrical haha), its still one of the best looking models Mercedes has produced, especially the later models with updated fascias. Gorgeous car and I plan to restore mine to showroom condition. I don’t care how much these cars go for in the future, I’ll never sell it because a) It’s my first car, ever, and b) I love it way too much! It’s too easy to repair and it drives like butter.

  9. I’ve owned five Mercedes: two w202’s, one w140, a w124 and an r107. While the build quality in all is superb, I’m preferential to the W202. I’ve owned two 1999 C230 KOMPRESSOR’s and they’re are phenomenal. Smooth ride, solid car, great gas mileage and classic Bruno Sacco styling. One look and you know it’s a Mercedes.
    The vehicles they produced since 2000 have been lackluster except for the R230 (SL). They’ve eliminated the hood ornament on most models, gated shifter is gone…and now marketing front wheel drive models. Really?
    Their slogan used to be “Engineered like no other car in the world.”
    Somehow, they’ve lost their focus. The engineering went out the window, quality suffered because of that and the styling is anything but Mercedes. I do hope they reconsider their ganeplan and focus on the core values that made Mercedes a prestigious brand but bulletproof when it came to quality, engineering and reliability.

  10. I owned a 1997 C280 Sport from 1999 to about 2007 and loved every minute of it. In 2007, I bought a 2001 SLK230 so I gave the C280 to my mother who also loved it. Alas a jerk plowed into it, and it was totaled in 2013 or thereabouts.

    Now I want my old car back and am having trouble finding a clean, low-mileage car. (<75,000 miles). I'm also finding that the sport package is almost impossible to find.

    But here are some pointers for anyone doing the same quest.
    In 1998 the inline 6 was replaced with a V6, that a local mercedes mechanic described as "bulletproof" and one of the best engines Mercedes ever made. In contrast, the inline 6, while a terrific engine, is prone to head gasket leaks. Mercedes came up with a revised gasket which is fine, but replacing the gasket is about a $1,500 job, so best avoided if you can. So I'm looking for a 98-2000 model.

    Also, the pre-1996 engine wires tend to deteriorate as they were meant to be biodegradeable. You can read lots of stories about these being replaced at high cost. The wiring was updated in '96 and for this reason I would never own a pre-'96 car with original wiring.

    Transmissions are reasonably solid, but the control plate can go, and this is about a $1,000 repair. The mechanicals are good, though.

    Otherwise, this is one of the more reliable Benzes made in the modern era. I see plenty for sale with 240,000 miles on them and owners claiming they are running strong.

    In my view, the styling is very classic Mercedes: restrained good taste. I'll also add that highway fuel economy can be very good if you use the cruise control. Once on a trip from New York City to Boston I averaged 33 MPG using the cruise at about 70 mph.

    So this car is desirable. Whether the value will go up is another question. Mercedes made 1.8 million of them worldwide, and probably sold more than half of those in the USA. That argues against any scarcity value any time soon.

    But a nicely kept, low-ish mileage car has a LOT of intrinsic value.

  11. I would agree with Kim G. So many claim the styling is bland. I think it is the last classic Mercedes shape. From what I am told it is also the last of the old Engineering doctrine although built to price. I have a 96 C220 with 96k (as of this writing it is June 2017). Some switch and contact issues. Some minor surface rust but not major and I live close to the ocean. My plans, get MCCA Silver Star in 4 years then save for a first class paint job. What will it be worth. I am sure more than the $1500 I paid for it
