Ran When Parked got to spend the better part of a weekend in Bangkok, Thailand, on our way back home from a business trip in China. Having never been to Thailand before, we were impressed by all of the old cars that are still on the road. Continue reading »

Topical advertising: Cars and boats
Automakers often try to draw a parallel between cars and boats in advertisements and promotional photos. Picturing the two modes of transportation together is a way to emphasize the utilitarian nature of a vehicle, or to associate it with a particular – and generally affluent – lifestyle. The 16th annual Monte-Carlo Historique rally
The 16th annual Monte-Carlo Historique Rally took place last week in southeastern France. Organized by the Automobile Club of Monaco, it is open to cars that participated in the iconic rally from 1955 to 1980 and that were built between those years. Continue reading »
Back In Black: Project Saab Lives!
It’s been a while since this author has written for Ran When Parked. For that, I apologize, and it’s not that I have forgotten you, dear readers! One thing I have accomplished in the hiatus, is the completion of Project Saab, now known as “The Slaab” with some affection. I believe I last mentioned this … Continue reading »
Sunday classic: Saab 900i 16s Yacht Club

Looking back, my classmates in high school probably suspected there was something strange about me long before I started showing up every morning in an old Saab, though I doubt anyone found it all that surprising. I wore a lot of black, had a cynical attitude, took art classes, was terrible in gym, and liked … Continue reading »
Saab’s fight for survival
Today will go down as one of the saddest days in automotive history: Sweden’s Saab has collapsed after over sixty years of building cars. CEO Victor Muller personally delivered the bankruptcy application to a district court in Vänersborg, Sweden, this morning. At 5:30pm local time, the court officially declared Saab bankrupt. 汽车, part two
Earlier this week we published the first part of our series on Chinese cars. The second follows the same format but it also covers a couple of odds and ends, including some of the older cars we spotted. As a reminder, old cars are few and far between since most outside manufacturers were not present … Continue reading »
Car brew
Cars and beer often go together in the garage. Rare is the man who hasn’t enjoyed a cold one while fixing his car, or after, or even before if facing a particularly Herculean task. With this in mind, Ran When Parked has compiled a non-exhaustive reference guide of beers to drink while dealing with miscellaneous … Continue reading »
